Yesterday I was reading the news and noticed a new name – DeepPocket. Around that name, I’ve found that service is available for foreigners and Thai nationals. After seeing that I’ve look on the internet and haven’t found any resources in English. I am happy to provide more information about the service, probably as a first place in English internet.

I’ve downloaded the app and passed KYC. It is actually the easiest digital wallet in Thailand to register for foreigners, you need to provide a passport and a second document (work permit, pink ID or ex. driving licence – and this is a good message because in many provinces Thai driving licence is a document you can get on any type of visa – even on visa exemption).

After providing all the documents for KYC, I waited like 10 minutes and my account was fully active.

Based on a quick look at the app (and the advert above) I see that the idea of DeepPocket is to be a competition to Deemoney – international transfers. The app offers really good exchange rates and transfer fees from Thailand to other countries (The company cooperates with Wise).

Second thing, the app offers virtual (can also order physical) cards. This functionality is a bit useless for me because acceptance of credit cards in Thailand is pretty low, then more important things are cash and QR code payments.

About QR code payments, I’ve tested it and was able to send money to any PromtPay QR code. This is a big thing, which means this is the easiest service that offers QR PromptPay payments for foreigners in Thailand.

How to top up an account? This is the biggest con of the app, before was almost too perfect to believe but this makes it a bit problematic for travelers and expats in Thailand. You can top up the app only through Thai Banks or in some stores physically. That means you first need to bring money to Thailand, get it ex. from an ATM and then you can top up your account. That means you can’t save money by moving your foreign currency (ex. through wise) directly to your digital wallet. If the creators of the app read this, please allow them to top-up the account ex. with the Wise account, that would be a game changer.

Summary:

Deepocket is an interesting new wallet on the market for Expats in Thailand, I think the best usage for now is for people who earn money in Thailand and would like to send it abroad. Second users can be people who don’t like using cash and would like to pay with QR codes in Thailand, but the benefit here is not that big, because if you don’t have a Thai Bank account the only option to top up is just by cash in one of the cooperating stores. The big benefit of the app is the good KYC process and the ability to open an account with a passport and driving licence.
